Yes, and no.
For obvious reasons, you have to keep your image sizes reasonable and make them as small of a file size as possible.
I understand that you put a lot of work into your sets, scenery, and special effects and I don't want what starts out as a great picture to end up looking crappy any more than you. Most programs have a "Save for Web" feature, which will allow you to reduce the file size and optimize it for viewing on the web.
If you're using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, save for web at 60% resolution and you won't loose any quality. This is the way that all of my files for my story (Death of a Friend) are saved, and there is no discernable difference from the original...but the difference in file size is astronomical.
I periodically check directories for file size, and anything larger than 100KB raises a flag. Using the method described above, it would be rare for an image to be larger than that.
